Question: Discuss Sociology And Social Science Practice Scenario? Answer: Introduction As a professional social worker one needs to develop skills that will enable him to handle the clients. The client ability to express herself depends on the skills and the personality the social worker portrays. As a social worker one needs to develop empathy and confidence which are essential in developing an effective relationship, understanding, and communication. According to Joannidou Konstantikaki (2008), empathy and confidence help the professional and the client to develop important ideas that will help in finding solutions and preventing conflicts. Empathy is the ability to understand the client from their perspectives or the ability to put yourself in another persons situation to understand their feelings about the situation. As a professional social worker, you are required to disconnect from your personal feeling which is important in developing a constructive relationship with the client. It enables the client to openly share their feelings and give important informatio n that will be suitable for solving their problems. Ideas and thoughts about Rosa Rosa is a 39 years old foreigner from El Salvador who came to Australia under a Special Humanitarian Program with her husband and three teenage children. Rosa could be having a challenge in adapting to conditions in a foreign country. In most cases, moving into a foreign country is exciting. However, there are many challenges that an individual face. Adapting to a new culture is the first challenge that one faces. Adjusting to new customs ways of living and becoming a part of the foreign culture is the most difficult experience that one faces. Some of the culture in a foreign country may seem strange some of the practice may be annoying, and the excitement that one had before moving to a new country starts to decline. An individual is forced to start accepting the cultural practices in her new country to adjust to a new environment. Rosa is facing challenges in expressing herself in English. This means that she has difficulties in communicating effectively. So I need to prepare first on how we shall communicate effectively with her and therefore, I may require a translator during the session. This will help her express without difficulties. This will make her feel comfortable, and I will be able to understand her better. By using her native language, she will also develop the confidence to share more information and also assist in finding solutions to the problems that she is facing. Rosa is also disappointed since she was a trained primary school teacher in El Salvador. However, she is incompetent to work as a teacher in Australia because she cannot speak fluent English. This has forced her to work as a process worker at a factory in Adelaide. Her husband Fernando was an engineer in their home country but works as teachers during the day and as a cleaner at night. This shift in their occupation is quite discouraging, and this could also be affecting her psychologically. Rosa is also having difficulties her 16 years old daughter Ana. I need to understand that Rosa is distressed with her daughters situation because it has gotten out of hand. She is worried about her daughter because she has missed school twice without permission in the current term. According to Rosa Ana was a good performer in El Salvador but she has dropped significantly in Australia. Rosa is also concerned that Ana used to be lively and happy, but now she has become withdrawn. Unlike her other sibling, Ana does not have friends though she seems close to her brother and sister. Ana could be having a problem adapting to a new environment which makes her withdraw herself. Rosa could be thinking that her daughter is going through some challenges that have ruined her progress and she feels rejected. She had tried to discuss the situation with Ana, but instead, Ana walked away angry, and she was not willing to share any information about her situation. Perhaps, Rosa was humiliated by the act of her daughter. She may also be worried that her daughters situation cannot be solved since she is not opening up. She is troubled by her daughters attitude, and she may also have felt that her daughter does not love her. She may also feel rejected by her daughter this could be distressing her. She is worried that her daughter could end up working as a factory process worker like herself if she fails to complete her secondary school education. This shows that Rosa is not happy with her occupation and she might be regretting. Rosa has developed psychological problems that have that have made her develop sleeping complications she has been having this condition in the past months. According to WedMD (2017), this condition is referred to as insomnia which may result from life stresses such as job change, family problems, anxiety among others. She is also distressed that her husband comes home late and often he does not have a good mood. The condition of her husband could also be affecting her greatly this is because she no longer have time with her and her mood has changed. Her husbands change of mood may come as a result of working for longer hours as a teacher and as a cleaner at night. She could be worried that her husband no longer loves her. Since she does not give her much attention when he comes home, Rosa could be feeling rejected by her husband, and she is worried about their relationship. Her condition is worsening because she has started having strange dreams after which she cannot sleep. She is being disturbed by these dreams. It is apparent that Rosa is facing many problems that have emerged since they moved from El Salvador to Australia. This change has affected her family members such Ana who has developed a strange behavior that is troubling Rosa. She may be worried that her relationship with her daughter could be broken. Rosa is in need of a professional assistance which will help her cope with her situations. I need to develop an empathetic relationship with her so that she can develop the confidence needed to share her views well. She will also feel appreciated and feel comfortable during the session. By developing a close relationship with her during the session will enable me to understand her feelings about the situations that she is facing better. This will help us come up with solutions that will help change her perspective about this problems. It will also be essential in helping her change her daughters situation. As a social worker should possess essential interpersonal skills that will help them develop a close relationship with the clients. This creates a favorable environment to the client and the social worker to work together in helping the client cope with the problems affecting her. In the case of Rosa, she needs to be understood well since most of her problems have resulted from their migration to Australia which has mostly affected the personal lives of her daughter Ana and her Husband. Who seem to her source of her distress. Lesson learned about social work for the stories Child migration is defined as the movement of people aged between 3-18 years with the countrys borders or across the border. From the stories illustrated social work plays an important role in solving social problems facing people in the society. During the Second World War, Over 7000 children were taken from the British care homes, and they were shipped to Australia and Canada. This was following the development of the policy Good white stock the policy which resulted from increased levels of poverty which made the government belief that it would be reduced by of loading poor children. Many children were abused, and they suffered since they were being used as laborers in Australia farms. Margaret Humphreys, a social worker, exposed this scandal. She took assumed the responsibility of helping these children to find their parents. She faced death threats by discovering the truth about child migrants. This could help them get back to their normal lives. She could gather information abo ut the experiences of migrant children from Britain which had traumatized them. As a social worker, Humphreys played an important role in caring for the children and helping they trace their families. The authorities used to deceive the parents whose children were missing that they were either dead or they had been adopted. Many parents died without knowing where their children were. As a social worker, Margret revealed the scandals the surrounded children migration. There were many scandals behind child migration such as lack of educational provision, child labor inadequate payments and many children also committed suicide due to the mistreatment they faced. As a social worker, Margret, helped many migrant children gain their identity and changed their lives. Social workers have the responsibility to enhance or restore the functioning of the society and create conditions suitable for individuals, families and the society. For instance in the story of Haig who was a child migrant explains that they were being beaten with straps if they did anything wrong and they did not have anyone to take care of them. As a result, he felt empty because he had lost his personal identity and belonging. Through the help of Margret, he was able to meet with some members of his family like his sister Marie. Social workers help other people to increase their abilities to solve problems and to cope with their problems. They facilitate better relationships interaction between people and their environment and between individuals and make organizations responsible to people and influence social policy. Social workers work as helpers in the society as illustrated in the five stories on British children migrants. Social workers can influence the functioning organizations which are responsible to people and also influence social policies.
